Usability is one of the most important aspects of website design, but what does usability actually mean?
Usability means that everyone, from grandma to grandpa, can find what they are looking for on the website and can perform necessary actions. A user-friendly website is easy to use, clear, works well on all devices, and is accessible to everyone. The site’s navigation is logical, the content is easy to find, and the pages load quickly. By focusing on usability, you ensure that site visitors get the best possible first impression of your business. A well-designed website improves the user experience, but it also improves search engine visibility and can boost sales.
In a nutshell, usability means the following:
1. Clear menu structure and calls to action (CTA)
A logical and clear menu and page structure help users easily find what they’re looking for. In general, the ideal number of items in the main menu is 5-7. If there’s more content, use submenus.
Calls to action (CTA) guide the user to take specific actions, such as making a purchase or getting in touch. A well-designed CTA is visible, enticing, and easy to find. When a user scrolls to the bottom of a page, is there a hint for the next step, or does the user end up twiddling their thumbs?
2. Responsiveness
The site must function flawlessly on all devices (desktop, smartphone, tablet). More and more people are using smartphones to browse the web. Google has started ranking mobile-optimized websites higher in search results. According to statistics, in Finland, 58% of people browse the web on desktops, and 40% on smartphones. 3. Fast loading time
Ensure that your website loads quickly because users may leave your site out of frustration if it’s slow. To improve loading speed, optimize images by reducing their file size (e.g., EWWW Image Optimizer), and use caching (e.g., LiteSpeed Cache). 4. Easy reading experience
Use subheadings and short paragraphs to improve the reading experience. Users often scan pages quickly to get an idea of the content and find the information they need. Pay particular attention to informative subheadings that grab attention and provide essential information to the reader. The optimal number of words in a paragraph is 50-75 words. 5. Consistent and thoughtful visual design
A complicated or chaotic layout confuses users and does not give a professional impression. (Read here about common design mistakes.) Clear fonts, color palettes, and sufficient contrast are key, as they not only affect usability but also the mood and message the site conveys. Properly chosen fonts and colors improve usability, support brand identity, and guide users’ attention to important elements.
6. Search engine optimization (SEO)
Usability and SEO (search engine optimization) go hand in hand. SEO is not just about inserting keywords; it’s a comprehensive approach. A good user experience, such as clear navigation, fast loading time, and clear content, all improve a site’s search engine rankings. Google values pages that provide helpful information and keep users engaged.
7. Accessibility
Adequate text size, alt text for images, and button labeling are essential for accessibility. Well-labeled buttons, like “Send message” or “Read more reviews,” make the site more accessible. For example, the common button text “Read more” is too vague because it doesn’t tell the user what they are reading more about. A better option would be “Read more about coaching” or “Learn more about the product.” The button label should always clearly state what the action does.
